Every fitting asks how far you hit it.This one asks where you meant to be standing.

A fitting instrument for players who still keep score — built to map the golf you actually play, then specify the set that delivers it on a swing you can repeat on the eighteenth hole.

What it really sells is compression: arriving at this understanding without the twenty years and the six sets of irons a man normally buys and sells learning it.

The industry fits to maximum output. It measures how hard you can swing, builds clubs that maximise that number, and treats the golf course as whatever is left over. The close is always the same: you picked up twelve yards.

That produces a bag with no reserve. Every full shot sits at the edge of capacity. Repeatability is worst exactly where the club lives, fatigue eats it by the fifteenth hole, and there is nothing left for wind or a bad lie — so the player swings harder, and it goes worse.

This instrument runs the other direction. It maps the course you actually play, from the tees you actually play, and finds where you intend to be standing on every approach. The bag is derived from that — and distance becomes an output rather than a goal.

Nothing is assigned by category. Not by age, not by handicap, not by swing speed. Every value in the build traces back to a measurement or it does not go in the build. Two players with identical carries get different bags, because the courses they play and the shots they own are different.

And the bag is organised by function, not by distance. Four bands, four jobs. Club numbers are derived, never assigned — an 8-iron is a Pin Hunter for a man whose 8 flies 140 and a close-quarters club for a man whose 8 flies 125.

The specification belongs to the player. It is written so it works at any fitter, with any manufacturer, for a man who will never buy a thing from us. That is not a courtesy. It is the only structure under which the diagnosis can be trusted.

What the evidence says

Older golfers hit more fairways. Men in their seventies find 56% of fairways against 39% in their twenties — replicated independently by Arccos and Shot Scope. The demographic being sold forgiveness is already the most accurate on the course.

And they are consistently short into greens. Golfers 70+ leave 43% of approach shots short, against 37% in their twenties and forties. That is not a physical failure. It is what an uncalibrated bag and an unmeasured carry ladder produce.

No published evidence establishes that age is the right fitting variable. There is no public data on iron category, shaft flex or shaft material by age. The industry sorts by age and has never shown that age is the correct sort.

And no published evidence shows senior-targeted equipment has lowered senior scoring. No longitudinal study exists either way. The equipment changed every year for thirty years and nobody measured whether it worked.

The four bands

What it will refuse to do

The instrument runs a build gate before anything is specified. If contact is not repeatable, if dispersion is wide, or if the carry numbers came from memory rather than measurement, it returns hold — do not build.

Gapping is meaningless for a player who cannot find the centre of the face, and a build derived from remembered numbers is a guess with a price tag. A fitting business is structurally unable to give that answer. This one gives it, and hands over the map regardless.

Every fitting in the industry measures how far you hit it, then builds clubs to maximise that. This one maps the course you actually play, finds where you intend to be standing, and builds the set that puts you there on a swing you can repeat on the eighteenth hole.

Current Bag as it sits today

Record what he is playing now before anything is measured. Head type, shaft, and age of the set. This is the control against which the demo kit is tested.

The Theft Inventory what he has lost

Golf is a game of recoveries. A bag that only produces one shot leaves a player with nothing when he is left, right, short, or under a tree. Ask what he used to be able to do and can't now — and whether he stopped because of his body or because of his equipment.

The Course Phase 01

Nothing about the player is measured yet. The course sets the demand; the player's intent sets the target; the bag is derived from both. Map the course he plays most, from the tees he actually plays.

Bounce and grind cannot be specified without turf and firmness. Penetration requirements cannot be specified without wind.

Hole-by-Hole Demand the dataset nobody collects

What this produces: the distribution of shot distances the course he plays most actually forces on him. That distribution is what decides where his bag needs tight gaps and where it can afford wide ones. The course is the machine, not the subject.

Type par and yardage off the scorecard. Put a typical tee shot carry in the bar and press the button — every par 4 and 5 fills, par 3s fill from the hole yardage, and every shot after that computes itself. Computed numbers show in amber.

The grey left columns show what remains after each shot. They are how you catch a wrong number. Green means the hole is accounted for; red means the shots add up to more than the hole.

The only holes needing attention are the ones where he lays up. 493 par 5, 240 tee shot — it fills Shot 2 as 253. If he actually hits a 200-yard 5-wood there, type 200 over the 253 and watch left become 53; Shot 3 fills 53 on its own. Two demands out of that hole: a 200 and a 53.

A driver off a par 4 or 5 is not counted as a demand; every other shot is.

The Read Phase 02 · how he plays a hole

Three holes with teeth. Water, sand, elevation, doglegs, forced carries. Walk him through each one and have him call the shots exactly as he would play them — not as he thinks he should answer. There is a safe route through every hole and a route that pays. What he picks, and where he is willing to miss, tells you more about the bag he needs than any launch monitor session.

A predictable one-sided miss outranks a smaller symmetrical one for any player who plays his miss on purpose. Ask it hole by hole, then ask whether he can actually produce that miss on command — or whether he is only hoping for it.

The Intent Phase 03 · the conversation nobody has

Not "how far do you hit it." Where do you want to be standing, and what do you want in your hand when you get there. Every touring professional plans a hole this way. No fitting has ever been built from it.

The Working Swing everything is built to this

A set fitted to maximum output leaves no reserve. Every shot sits at the edge of capacity, repeatability is worst where the club lives, fatigue eats it by the fifteenth hole, and there is nothing left for wind or a bad lie. Fit the working swing and all of that inverts.

Carry Ladder working swing, not maximum

What each club actually carries at the swing he repeats. This is the dataset every band boundary is derived from, and almost no player has it written down. Estimates are fine to start — it gets replaced with measured numbers later.

Course carries govern. Everything else is a shape, and the instrument will say so.
Reference swing, per club

A pitching wedge specified at full swing is specified for a shot he will never hit. Declare the swing each club actually gets — and record its carry at that swing, not at maximum.

Gapping is meaningless for a player who cannot find the centre of the face, and a build derived from remembered numbers is a guess with a price tag. This gate exists so the instrument can return “do not build yet” — the answer a fitting business is structurally unable to give.

Head class is decided per band, not per set. Strike pattern and consequence of a miss are not the same in Advancement as they are in CQB.
Head geometry — the variables the class name hides

“Muscleback” and “cavity” do not carry these decisions. Blade length sets how far the strike centre sits from the hosel. Offset sets where the face is relative to his hands. For a heel-biased, inside-out player, a wider head with heavy offset makes the hosel easier to find, not harder.

What each band is actually aiming at

A single set-wide gapping chart assumes every club is trying to hold a green. It isn't. A player who lands long irons short and releases them needs the opposite descent spec from the one his scoring irons need — same set, opposite requirements.

Apex at partial swing

Standard loft progression governs one thing: distance at full swing. It never asks what trajectory is available at three-quarter effort. For a player who needs height into a short par 3 without making his hardest swing, that question decides the lofts.

If the answer requires a full swing to generate height, the loft is wrong — not the swing.

A predictable one-sided miss outranks a smaller symmetrical one for any player who plays his miss on purpose. Every game-improvement design goal shrinks the miss and randomises its direction — correct for a player who doesn't know where it's going, and the removal of a skill for one who does.

A tight pattern makes the muscleback trade-off affordable. A scattered pattern does not — and that decision is made per band.

Delivery Profile Phase 05 · measured, never assumed

Measurement conditions — record before the numbers
Numbers taken under different conditions do not compare. Range balls fly 10–15% short and lose most of it in spin, which flattens apex and descent together. A mat hides a fat strike. Without this block, every number below is an anecdote with a decimal place.
Target window, per band

Advancement is aiming at a landing area and releasing. Pin Hunters are landing on a green and stopping. Those want different descent angles, and one field cannot carry both. Tour fitters target roughly 45–50° through the mid irons; measured tour delivery runs 48–52° from 3-iron to wedge.

Every value in the build sheet below traces to a measurement here, or it does not go in the build. Release timing is a gate: a player who releases early to midway does not get launch and spin changes from shaft bend profile — for him the shaft is a weight and feel decision only.

Physical Envelope what the body will carry

A compressed descending strike raises load on the lead wrist, elbow and lumbar spine. That is fine for a player whose tissue tolerates it and an injury for one whose doesn't. No standard serving this age range prescribes a strike pattern without screening for it.

Every line traces upstream. Any value that cannot be verified by a third party does not belong in a conformance spec — which is why mass is MOI and shaft is a measured EI profile, not a manufacturer trajectory label.
